My Morning with Erin Maie

I’ve always been a lover of makeup. I admire how it can transform, empower and embrace. Over time makeup has evolved, companies are now more accountable for what they put into their products and the ‘IN’ looks certainly come and go. But my favourite makeup look has always remained tried and true over the years. It’s glowing skin with a smokey bronzed eye. My Classic.

An Australian makeup artist who’s work I’ve followed via Instagram for some time is Erin Maie. She is well known for her sculpting and shading techniques, skin perfection and creating the perfect smokey eye. When the opportunity came up to hang out at her house, talk makeup and eat raspberries…. I couldn’t resist.

Q- Erin, what do you like to prep the skin with?

I like to start with a spritz spray, I make my own mix that contains a Hydrating spray, Mac Fix +, Mac Softening lotion and essential oils. This helps softens and preps the skin. I also use my hands for this step so I can feel the skin and see areas that may be more dry or require a specific product. Today we are using the Vita Liberata beauty blur as a primer, buffed well into the skin. I like to build up the skin in layers instead of going straight in with a heavier coverage foundation. I still want the skin to look like skin.

Pro Tip- Use a hydrating sheet mask before a big event to give you that added hydration!

Q. What’s your Favourite Foundation right now?

I’m really liking The Ordinary serum foundation. I have used MAC Face and Body for such a long time but The Ordinary gives slightly more coverage and sits beautifully on the skin. I like applying foundation with the Dirty Thirty beauty sponges as the small size is great for blending into the smaller areas.

Pro Tip: Pin point conceal a spot with the tip of the beauty blender and blend the edges.

Q. What do you like to use under the eye for concealing?

I like to mix an illuminater with a little bit of foundation that is left on the sponge. I don’t like using heavy concealers under the eye as it can sit in fine lines. I want the skin under the eyes to reflect and glow. I like the Becca skin perfector in Opal. Again I like to use a small beauty blender (dirty thirty beauty blender) to get into the corners of the eye.

Pro Tip: Keep the product low and blend up rather than putting the product straight under the eye.

Q. Brows… Are you a powder or pencil lover?

We used a powder palette today with two styles of brushes, a small angled point and a dense short brush. I like powder as I can push the product into the brows and blend them through. Personally on myself when i have a day off, I will just do my brows and tinted moisturizer. So I feel the face is framed yet still a natural overall look. Oh and I always brush them up!

Q. One eye product you use on everyone?

Mac Paint Pot in Ground work. A universal skin tone shade with a cream consistency. I love it!

Pro tip: Start on the mobile lid and blend out over the eye.

Q. What products do you like for contouring and bronzing the face?

I love a bronze glow with the look we are doing today. I don’t have one go-to bronzing product but I use the MAC Match Master Concealer stick in a dark shade often….. we used the shade 7.5 today. I also have in my kit CHANEL Soleil Tan De Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base, Charlotte Tilbury film star bronze, Hourglass and Nars liquid bronze in the shade Laguna. I like to buff the product into the skin, in the natural areas where the sun would hit.

Pro tip: Don’t blend the contour lower than your natural cheekbone line. Follow the natural line of your face.
