‘Right angles don’t attract me. Nor straight, hard and inflexible lines created by man….what attracts me are free and sensual curves. The curves we find in mountains, in the waves of the sea, in the body of the woman we love.’
Oscar Niemeyer

When styling your home there are so many visual cues to consider such as spacial awareness, colour, light, texture and functionality. Yet some of the simplest elements can add a visual impact to your space.
See my must have items to include when styling your home-
- Textured/ Natural linens: I like to use natural materials for my bedding and towels. I like the idea of bringing nature back into the home and I love the feel of natural fibers against the skin. A plush wool throw rug placed over the back of an old arm chair can give a bohemian feel to your space. Around my home the fabrics I love to style with are linen, cotton, cashmere and wool.
- Floor Rugs: The easiest way to soften a space, give warmth underfoot or create zoning in a large space. Consider your overall colour palette and whether you want to contrast your space or keep a monochromatic scheme. I like to add floor rugs in bedrooms that have a hard floor surface, so it’s soft underfoot getting in and out of bed.
- One Designer piece: Now when I say designer, I’m talking authentic- No rip offs! Owning a special handmade piece is something to treasure for years to come. Of course you can pick up a brand new Herman Miller piece or a Patricia Urquiola sofa if the budget permits but if the purse strings are tight head to vintage flea markets, second hand furniture dealers and deceased estate sales. You would be surprised what gems you can find sourcing designer pieces this way. At times you may find items well below market value but keep in mind dealing with deceased estates, you may be dealing with families that have an emotional connection… so be prepared to be flexible.
- Greenery: It’s such an easy and cost effective way to breathe life and colour into a space. I have mentioned the benefits of planting before- styling your home article, but I can’t stress enough how much potted plants, flowers beds, succulent bowls and hanging creepers offer vibrancy and texture in the home. Select breeds that are hardy, if like me you have been known to kill a cactus! I love any plant that is sculptural or multifaceted to give maximum visual impact for both indoor and outdoor.
